Is Apple Running Out of Reasons to Sell Me a Pro?

I've bought the Pro twice and only chosen it once. Before doing it again I looked at what the extra ₹52,000 actually buys — and found most of it had quietly been handed down to the phone that doesn't cost it.


I have bought the Pro twice, and chosen it once.

The first was an iPhone 11 Pro in 2019, which I thought about properly. The second was a 14 Pro in 2022, bought because somebody relieved me of the first one — and replacing a stolen phone isn’t a decision so much as a reflex. You buy what you had. I was most of the way to a third before it occurred to me that I hadn’t actually evaluated this purchase since 2019. I just knew Pro was the good one.

So I went and looked at what the word actually buys, this year and in the two years I bought it. The honest answer is that the Pro has been quietly running out of things to be, and nobody sends you a letter when the reason you’ve been paying for disappears.

What Pro meant when I first paid for it

In 2019 the gap wasn’t a spec. It was a different category of screen.

The iPhone 11 had an LCD. The 11 Pro had OLED. That’s not a better version of the same thing — it’s a different technology with different physics. The numbers are almost comic: the 11’s panel managed a contrast ratio of about 1,400:1, because an LCD lights everything from behind and some of that backlight leaks through even when the pixel is meant to be black. The 11 Pro, which can simply switch a pixel off, was rated at 2,000,000:1.

Resolution went the same way — 326 pixels per inch against 458 — and peak brightness 625 nits against 800, or 1,200 in HDR.

Buying the Pro in 2019 wasn’t a preference. You were choosing whether your phone had a modern display at all.

What it meant when I bought this one

By 2022 both phones had OLED, so the argument moved. It was still a substantial one.

The iPhone 14 shipped with the A15 — last year’s chip, the one from the 13. The 14 Pro got the A16. The standard model ran at 60Hz while the Pro had 120Hz ProMotion. The standard had the notch; the Pro introduced the Dynamic Island. Peak brightness was 1,200 nits against 2,000. And the main camera was 12MP against 48MP, with the standard limited to two lenses rather than three.

That is a genuinely different phone, and I don’t regret it. But notice what changed between 2019 and 2022: the Pro stopped being a different class of device and became a better-equipped one. The gap narrowed from technology to specification.

What it means now

This year it narrowed again, and this time something broke.

The iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro have the same display. Same 6.3-inch OLED, same resolution, and — for the first time on a standard iPhone — the same 120Hz ProMotion. The always-on display, which was a Pro-only feature on the phone in my pocket, is now on both. So is the 48MP main sensor and the ultrawide.

Every buying guide still tells you the Pro is the one with the smooth screen. That was true for four generations — the 13, 14, 15 and 16. It stopped being true this year, and the advice hasn’t caught up.

So what’s actually left

Four things, and they’re smaller than the price suggests.

A GPU core. The A19 and the A19 Pro both have six CPU cores and a sixteen-core neural engine. The Pro has one extra GPU core and 12GB of RAM against 8GB. In Geekbench’s Metal test that’s about 37,000 against 44,300 — a real, reproducible gap of roughly 20%.

Then there’s what happens when you use them. GSMArena’s reviewers, having lived with both, concluded that “in everyday use, both phones feel equally swift, fluid, and thermally efficient.” A fifth more graphics power that you cannot feel unless you are rendering video or playing something demanding for a sustained period.

I want to be careful here, because “benchmarks don’t matter” is lazy. The gap is real and it will show up in sustained load. It just isn’t what most people are doing with a phone, and it isn’t what the price is implicitly promising.

A bigger battery. On paper the Pro’s cell is 15% larger — 3,692 mAh against 4,252. A physical quantity, not marketing. I had this down as the one unambiguous argument on the list.

Two things spoil it, and the second is fatal.

The first is that we don’t get that battery. Those are the eSIM-only capacities, and India is not an eSIM-only market — our phones ship with a SIM tray, and the tray occupies space the cell would otherwise fill. The 17 Pro sold here is 3,998 mAh. So the advantage is 8%, not 15%.

The second is that capacity isn’t endurance. GSMArena run the same blended test across every phone they review, and the answer is startling:

The version sold in India lasts twenty-four minutes longer. Not fifteen percent of a day — twenty-four minutes. The eSIM version manages seventy-three, which is a real difference, and also a phone you cannot buy here.

That gap between 8% more capacity and 2.7% more endurance is the Pro’s extra silicon quietly eating its own advantage. The bigger battery is mostly there to feed the bigger chip.

A lens. This is the real one, and I’ll come back to it.

And a heavier phone. The 17 weighs 177g. The 17 Pro weighs 206g and is 0.8mm thicker. The premium model is the one that’s worse to hold for an hour.

That struck me as genuinely odd. Thinness and lightness have signalled expensive in every other product Apple sells. Here you pay 37% more for 29 additional grams, and there’s no framing in which that’s the better object to hold in bed.

The one reason that survives

The telephoto.

The standard 17 gives you 0.5x, 1x, and a 2x that is a digital crop of the main sensor — not a lens, just fewer pixels. The Pro adds a 48MP telephoto with real 4x optical reach and an 8x sensor crop on top of it.

Everything else on the list is a matter of degree. This one is a capability you either have or don’t. If you photograph anything at distance — a stage, a bird, the far side of a cricket ground — no amount of software gets you there from a 2x crop. The Pro also keeps ProRAW, ProRes and 4K120 video, which matter enormously to about four percent of buyers and not at all to the rest.

If someone asked me for one sentence: buy the Pro for the lens, not the badge.

The part that annoys me

The US price gap is $799 against $1,099 — a 37.5% premium.

In India it’s ₹82,900 against ₹1,34,900. That’s 62.7%.

The hardware difference is identical in both countries. The premium you pay for it is not.

Same GPU core. Same lens. Same phone in every respect — a slightly smaller battery, if anything. The step up costs two-thirds again as much here as it does there. That isn’t a finding about phones, it’s a finding about pricing, and I only noticed it because I converted the numbers instead of reading the local ones.

Why, though? Not a tariff on the finished phone — all four 17s are assembled in India now, the Pro included for the first time in the line’s history, which skips the 20% duty on imported handsets entirely. The duty lands on the imported components instead, and the Pro’s bill of materials is dearer, with 18% GST stacking on top of the larger landed cost. Local assembly, imported everything that matters. A proportional tax would have left the premium at 37.5% in both countries; this one compounds.

What I couldn’t establish

Three things, and the third is the reason a section is missing.

No independent thermal data. Reviewers agree the chip gap “shows up under sustained load,” but I could not find a third-party throttle curve for either chip — just synthetic peak scores. So the claim that the Pro holds performance longer is plausible and unverified.

The standard 17’s tray capacity. Apple published the SIM-tray figure for the 17 Pro but not for the standard 17, so I’ve had to compare the tested Indian Pro against the eSIM standard model. The endurance numbers are measured on real units, so the twenty-four minutes holds — but the capacity comparison is very slightly apples-to-oranges, and I’d rather say so than let it pass.

And a lot of the internet is now fake. Two of the top results for Indian iPhone buying advice cited a 2025 “survey” with confident percentages — “256GB covers 92% of Indian users’ needs” — and no link, no methodology, no author, and no trace of the survey itself anywhere. They read as generated filler. I’ve left them out, and I’m telling you they existed because their absence is otherwise invisible, and because they currently rank above the sources I did use.

So, am I buying one

Not this year, and it took writing this to work out why.

Every reason I paid for in 2019 has since been handed to the phone that costs less. The screen argument that made me buy an 11 Pro is gone. The screen argument that made me buy a 14 Pro is gone as of this year. What remains is a lens I rarely use, a battery I’d genuinely like, a GPU core I would never notice, and thirty extra grams I’d notice every night.

Your answer changes completely if you shoot at 4x. That’s the honest test, and it’s a much narrower question than “should I get the Pro” — which is, I suspect, exactly why nobody phrases it that way.

Which would make this the first time in seven years I’ve actually picked a phone rather than replaced one.
